Yamaha Pacifica
The
Yamaha Pacifica is one of those guitars that everybody has heard about. The 112
model is always winning awards for being a good value beginners guitar. That
"beginners" tag means that a lot o more accomplished players shy away from the
Pacifica. They shouldn't because the 112 is only one of a number of guitars in
the Pacifica range. If you pay more you get better wood, hardware and
pickups on what is already a superb guitar design. Mine is the 412V model. It
comes in the middle of the range and has alnico pickups and a better bridge. It
also features better wood than the 112.
This is the only guitar that I have bought from new. I
spent about 6 months kicking tyres in about a dozen different shops. At the same
time a friend of mine was also looking for a new guitar. he wanted a Strat.
Nothing else would do. He got one. Paid about the same as me for a Mexican. The
Yamaha blows it away on all counts. Sound, feel, look, versatility. But, Oh
dear, it doesn't have the word "Fender" on the headstock. I have nothing against
the Fender Strat. I think they are fantastic. I'm just sounding a warning
against getting blinkered by branding, particularly in the budget and mid price
ranges. The other thing to be sure to do is try the actual guitar you buy.
Having decided on the model I wanted, I tried three different 412V's. One was
inferior to the other two in terms of playability. The final decision came down
to aesthetics of the wood grain. Yamaha have a reputation for consistency in
manufacture, so be vigilant whatever make you go for.
At the time of writing this is still my number 1 guitar. I
love it. It has served me well in my current band "The Average Targets" where we
play anything from Sting to the Foo Fighters.
